Ash Borers: Little Beetles, Big Impact

WHAT ARE ASH BORERS?

Emerald Ash Borers are an invasive and destructive beetle that first appeared in North Carolina in 2013. These small, shiny green insects destroy trees from the inside out, as they lay their larvae among the bark and feed on the nutrients needed to keep trees growing strong. In general, the Emerald Ash Borer can destroy a tree within 5 years, but in some cases, death of the tree may occur in as little as 2 years.

How to know if your tree is infested

The telltale signs of an Emerald Ash Borer infestation are bark flecking, die-back of the upper branches, and cracks in bark that are visible to the naked eye. While Woodpeckers are beautiful to look at, they are known to feast on the larvae of Ash Borers hidden within tree bark and contribute to flecking. If you’re seeing an uptick of these birds in your yard as well as patchy spots on your tree, this could signify an infestation. A few dead branches are part of the natural life cycle of a tree; however, many dead branches could mean something more serious. Cracks in bark occur as the larvae of Emerald Ash Borers infiltrate the trees by making S-shaped tunnels. While the tunnels themselves may not be as easy to spot, cracks in the bark are something to look out for.
